What defines stratus clouds?

Stratus clouds are characterized by their formation in thin, uniform layers that cover vast areas of the sky, giving them a sheet-like appearance. This layered structure typically results in overcast conditions, where the sun is obscured, and these clouds may produce light precipitation, such as drizzle or mist. The nature of stratus clouds is fundamentally different from fluffy clouds or those associated with severe storm systems, as stratus is primarily linked to stable atmospheric conditions rather than significantly turbulent weather. Additionally, their formation is not restricted to nocturnal hours, allowing them to develop during the day as well, based upon humidity and temperature conditions in the atmosphere.
